Charles Stewart Stobie : [collection] : 1870-1928 ; manuscript.

Collection consists of correspondence, a diary (also available on microfilm), autobiographical materials, clippings, drawings, a scrapbook, genealogical material, and poetry composed by or relating to Charles Stewart Stobie. Born in Baltimore, Maryland on March 18, 1845, Stobie attended the Maryland Institute as well as Madras College in Scotland studying drawing and painting. In 1864 Stobie found employment with a horse and mule train that traveled to the Territory of Colorado. For the next decade he worked as both a painter and a scout in Colorado; during this decade he lived for a time with the Ute Indians and was adopted into the tribe. In 1875 he returned to Chicago, and spent the next five decades devoting himself to painting and the writing of poetry until his death in 1931. The Stobie collection was originally a mixed collection of material, portions of which are now housed by different departments of the Colorado Historical Society. Photographs from the collection are housed in the Photography Department and are available for research through the Stephen H. Hart Library. Additional Stobie material can be found in the Decorative & Fine Arts and Material Culture Departments. These materials are available to researchers by appointment only; contact the head curators of the Decorative & Fine Arts and Material Culture Departments for more information.
